A whole life going in and out of the shadows. A life torn to pieces. And now Sandro Arzu, the fifty-six year old from Arzano arrested at the end of May in Cagliari , where he had rebuilt his life after staging his murder, has chosen to exit the scene by taking his own life in prison in Uta. He did it last night, with no success despite the intervention of the doctors who, alerted by the Penitentiary Police officers, tried for a long time to revive him.

Arrested after disappearing for two years , since March 8, 2023, Arzu was accused of the murder of Beniamino Marongiu, which occurred last July in Arzana , in the center of the town.

But Sandro Arzu's criminal life began on the evening of Boxing Day 1990 in Via Sardegna, still in the Ogliastra town: a young mechanic, Bruno Ferrai, was killed by gunshots among the people walking by.

The trial documents written by the Assize Court in Lanusei will provide the culprits and the motive: the brothers Sandro and Luca Arzu , 21 and 19 years old, shoot Ferrai because they believe him to be the killer of their father, Pietro Arzu, a hardworking and spotless butcher murdered while driving up the Orgiolaonniga road, which connects Arzana to the provincial Villagrande-Tortolì. Sandro Arzu is sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Maria Grazia Caligaris, president of the association “Socialismo Diritti Riforme”, expresses «dismay and pain» for what happened and «closeness» to the family for the «tragic epilogue». The guarantor of prisoners Irene Testa underlines that this is yet another suicide in the prison of Uta .
