Suicide in Uta Jail.

An inmate recently transferred from the Nuoro Institute took his own life, turning his shoe laces into a noose.

This was announced by the secretary general of the UilPa Penitentiary Police of Sardinia Michele Cireddu: «An extreme and unforeseeable gesture also because the prisoner, recently transferred from the Nuorese Institute of Badu 'e Carros, had not presaged any hardship and it had not been necessary to submit against him the measure of great surveillance ".

«In the Institute of Uta we have for some time now denounced the extremely abnormal number of critical events in the prison sections – he continues -. There are very many suicide attempts, self-harm, attacks between prisoners, attacks against officers, death threats, offenses, hunger strikes, etc. Statistically these numbers deliver the sad record to the Uta prison as the institution where the most critical events occur in the Sardinian district and bring it into the rankings among the very first in Italy ».

This also means that " Prison Police personnel are forced to work constantly under stress , without suitable tools and means to be able to prevent and manage the aforementioned critical events, just as they cannot count on suitable places to safely manage the numerous hospitalizations in care trips and translations at the city airport».

"The Sardinian penitentiary system must be refounded immediately - he concludes - means and tools are needed to facilitate the work of the Agents in the sections, urgent assignments are needed in the institutions in difficulty, the sending of a new supervisor and directors to all the institutions is very urgent, without interventions tragic events will continue to follow one another inexorably ».
