Two sinkholes in the space of a few months, with the intermittent closure of the road to repair the craters in the asphalt. But now the work is finished and the road is ready to reopen. This is what happened on the Pedemontana, which connects Macchiareddu with Sulcis . Starting tomorrow, February 18, at 9 a.m., traffic on provincial road 2 will return to normal, to the delight of the many motorists who travel that stretch of road every day.
As reported on the Facebook page of the Municipality of San Giovanni Suergiu, "the Province of South Sardinia has informed us that from tomorrow, February 18 at 9 am, the road system of provincial road 2 will reopen, which had been closed for urgent work from kilometer 21+700 to 22+150". The first problems occurred with the rains of last autumn, when, after the storm of October 26 and 27, a huge hole opened up on the Pedemontana. The problem arose again two weeks ago, when the heavy rains caused similar damage, a few meters from the previous one.
According to Eugenio Lai, administrator of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, the root of the problem was «a landslide caused by the steel pipe that crosses the stretch of road. It could not withstand the passage of heavy vehicles». The one just concluded was «an emergency intervention, which does not resolve the situation. The pipe must be replaced and we are working to find the necessary funds to definitively resolve the problem».
