VOICES FROM THE PROCESSION:
THE SPEECHES – The speeches began at 11:15 a.m. outside the Regional Council building on Via Roma. The first to speak was Enrico Ruju, spokesperson for the USB, the union that organized today's demonstration. The cheering was stadium-like. The chants of "murderers, murderers" against Netanyahu's Israeli government were incessant. "In Italy, there's no money for healthcare, schools, or pensions, but they find it for weapons. It's unacceptable. We want peace, not war," Ruju said.
Then everyone fell silent: a minute of silence requested by the USB for the victims in Palestine . This was followed by a brief web link with Marco Loi, the Sardinian volunteer who took part in the Global Flotilla from Tunis, the international initiative to bring aid to the Palestinians.
OTHER SARDINIAN SQUARES – Other events are scheduled in Sassari at 10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. in Piazza d'Italia; Nuoro at 3:30 p.m. in Palazzo del Comune; Iglesias at 6 p.m. in Piazza Sella; Siniscola at 8:30 a.m. in Via Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa; Olbia at 10 a.m. in Piazza Crispi; and Ozieri at 9:30 a.m. in Piazza Garibaldi.
