It was a scary night for a twenty-year-old woman and a twenty-year-old man, who went out on their SUP around 6:00 PM yesterday and didn't return home, presumably due to the sudden change in weather conditions, with a strengthening mistral wind that has affected the entire Cagliari area since late yesterday afternoon.
The alarm was raised this morning around 4:00 a.m. by the parents , who reported the two boys' failure to return home to the Carabinieri in Quartu. The Cagliari Coast Guard operations room immediately dispatched a patrol boat and divers to the area, after requesting support from Fire Brigade divers, along with Carabinieri and police patrols conducting the search on land. A helicopter was also alerted.
At first light, the two boys were found on the rocks behind the Devil's Saddle and rescued by the responding naval vessels. The two young men suffered only a slight scare; not requiring medical attention, they were handed over to their families as soon as they returned aboard the patrol boat at the dock in Piazza Deffenu.
The Coast Guard reminds all those preparing to participate in recreational or sporting activities at sea to strictly adhere to basic safety rules : check the weather conditions beforehand (both before and during the planned trip), be aware of your own limitations and abilities (beginners should always avoid going out to sea unless weather conditions are guaranteed, such as calm seas and no wind). They also ask that you always notify your family or friends with your departure time and estimated return time, always carry a cell phone (using a waterproof bag that allows use in the water), and always check that your equipment is in perfect condition.
