A traffic accident involved five cars on Route 131, near Bauladu, due to a herd of wild boars that invaded the roadway. There were no injuries, but what happened is controversial.

"The accident last night on the 131 at Bauladu only confirms the alarm that we have raised several times and that on 8 July led us to take to the streets in Cagliari and in all the regional capitals Italians to ask that the Regions coordinate closely with the State and work resolutely to implement the measures envisaged for the control and containment of wildlife ”, explains Coldiretti.

The association also speaks, through the voice of the director for the Oristano area Emanuele Spanò, of a "phenomenon out of control, which with the Covid emergency, which has reduced the presence of man outdoors for months, has registered according to our estimates a further increase of 15% of wild boars (throughout Italy they have reached the record figure of 2.3 million specimens) that invade cities and countryside from north to south of Italy ”.

"The flocks - underlines Coldiretti - push ever closer to homes and schools, destroy crops, attack animals (there are several cases in Dorgali as in Fluminimaggiore of sheep gutted and killed by wild boars), causing road accidents with deaths and injured and scratching around in the rubbish with dangers for the health and safety of people ".

In short, an "unsustainable" situation in the countryside "with damage for at least 200 million euros per year to agricultural production throughout the peninsula but - Coldiretti emphasizes - the environmental balance of vast territorial ecosystems in areas of naturalistic value is also compromised with the loss of both animal and plant biodiversity ".

Without forgetting the danger of the spread of diseases highlighted by the same Surveillance and Prevention Plan for 2021 published by the Ministry of Health which reiterates how wild boars have a fundamental responsibility for the spread of African Swine Fever (Psa) and therefore one of the necessary measures is the numerical management of the population of these animals. Therefore, the action according to the Plan - continues Coldiretti - must be aimed at reducing both numerical and spatial activities through hunting activities, the control actions of law 157/92 article 19 and programmable actions in the network of protected areas.

“It is clear that wild boars have become a danger and a problem not only for the countryside but for all citizens who feel less safe even in the streets - states the president of Coldiretti Oristano Giovanni Murru -. The Giunta and the Regional Council were consequent to the commitments made after the July demonstration by approving a joint agenda for the modification of the national law of reference (number 157 of 1992), as well as the Councilor for the Environment Gianni Lampis with Provinces and Metropolitan City to simplify and de-bureaucratise the procedures. But even this latest incident reminds us that we need to hurry ”.
