Seven specimens of Bonelli's Eagle, extinct on the island a few decades ago, were released at dawn in the Tepilora Regional Natural Park.
The project, called Life Abilas, sees the collaboration of the Regional Department for Environmental Protection, the Forestas Agency (involved in the management of the forest areas affected by the project), the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), with the role of coordinator and leader of the project, e-distribuzione SpA (partner for risk mitigation along power lines), the Grupo de Rehabilitación de la Fauna Autóctona y su Hábitat of Madrid (Grefa), with a consolidated international experience in the reintroduction of the Bonelli's Eagle, and the Abbilarjos association.
"The reintroduction into nature of these magnificent specimens represents not only a concrete step towards the reconstitution of a viable population of Bonelli's Eagles in Sardinia, but also an opportunity to promote a broader reflection on the impact of human activities on ecosystems", explains the Councilor for Environmental Protection Rosanna Laconi. "The project is part of an environmental protection strategy inspired by the active and conscious participation of local stakeholders, according to an inclusive governance approach that is characterizing the work of this Administration".
This is an important opportunity, not only to learn about an environmental conservation project that aims to protect the Bonelli's Eagle, but also to contribute to the concrete actions envisaged by the project and to any proposals that may concern the Special Protection Areas (SPA) and the updating of the Standard Data Forms (SDF), with the aim of including key areas for the species within the Natura 2000 network. The project, co-financed by the European Union, is part of the previous LIFE Aquila A-Life program, continuing and strengthening the conservation and monitoring objectives of the rare raptor species, extinct in Sardinia.
"Welcoming Bonelli's eagles, which have been in the adaptation and release aviary of Tepilora Park for reintroduction in Sardinia for several years, was a great honor and a source of pride for us," said the director of the Park, Marianna Mossa. "The choice of the site represents a concrete recognition of the high environmental value of the Park and for this reason we hope that our protected area will continue to be a point of reference for reintroduction programs for other species of birds of prey and for the reconstitution of biodiversity in the various territories of the Island."
