"Today we will briefly walk through the fundamental stages of a journey into horror . A horror that led to the murder of Giulia Tramontano and her child, killed with 37 stab wounds with unprecedented violence on May 27, 2023." Thus the prosecutor Alessia Menegazzo at the beginning of her closing speech in the trial against Alessandro Impagnatiello for the aggravated murder of his seven-month-pregnant girlfriend. In the courtroom are the victim's family members including her mother Loredana Femiano, her father Franco and her brother Mario.

Impagnatiello sits in the defendants' cage with an always impassive look and his head often bowed. As was made known at the beginning of the hearing, he expressed his desire not to be photographed or filmed .

The plan and the cover-ups

"The murder of May 27 is only the dramatic epilogue of a murder plan that began many months earlier," the prosecutor explained, speaking of a "long-premeditated deadly plan" to kill Tramontano. "The defendant - she said - had been planning the murder for months, trying to eliminate mother and son by administering poison." On May 27, 2023, Alessandro Impagnatiello "simply changed the strategy in an already premeditated plan, which began with the poisoning of Giulia and Tiago in December 2022, and after the meeting between her and the other girl, he seized the opportunity on the fly, like a chess player he made the last move. " That day, Tramontano "staged Giulia's disappearance," "he turned the body into ashes to erase all evidence " and so Giulia " would have been yet another missing woman."

"The report of disappearance for voluntary absence is one of the many attempts to mislead investigators to divert suspicion from himself." The former barman had led people to believe that "poor Giulia suffered from depression and had already attempted suicide. This is the information he is spreading," said the prosecutor, calling it "indicative of the suicide he actually wanted to simulate."

«A staging of a certain caliber»

"Not only does he continue to lie, but he also induces his brother and mother to lie. He induces them to tell the police that he does not have a garage, because Giulia's battered body is in the garage," Menegazzo continues, retracing the days following the murder, after Impagnatiello had gone to file the complaint . The prosecutor speaks of a "staging of a certain caliber" and of a man "without mercy even towards his mother and brother, manipulated from start to finish to carry on his farce."

Alessandro Impagnatiello «presents traits of "mortal narcissism", he admitted the facts only when he was cornered, he admitted the facts with yet another attempt to manipulate reality to his advantage, it was not a spontaneous confession». «The psychiatrists heard in this trial have well explained the risk of seriality. The first murder is disorderly, the others are more rational and organized».

The reconstruction

"That evening - she continued -, the defendant stubbornly insists, telling her that Giulia's son was not hers. He insists even after killing her. Obstinate, he reiterates that his partner has serious mental problems. All this after he had barbarously killed her." The prosecutor then explained that "Impagnatiello told a colleague that there would no longer be any obstacles to his relationship with the other woman, this is the motive for the murder, Giulia and Tiago had become obstacles for him."

"He's a liar. He's a psychopath, a liar and without scruples. There is no sign of defense in poor Giulia, none. This is because when he returned home, he organized a real ambush. Here in front of you he told a story that makes no sense. The crime scene was prepared with extreme care." The victim, he observed, "signed her own death warrant when she told him she was expecting a child." Among the lies mentioned by the prosecutor, there was also the one about the rat poison, which Impagnatiello had said in court that he had administered to his partner twice with the aim of inducing an abortion. "He tried to manipulate all the trial data: there was a systematic poisoning. He tried to make us believe that the rat poison was intended to terminate the pregnancy and, denying all the scientific results of the autopsy, he said that he had administered the poison only twice . Moreover - added the prosecutor - in a horrifying scene from a horror movie, that is, while Giulia was sleeping. It didn't happen like that. Unfortunately, the quantity of poison was such that it had passed the placenta. They were not two administrations".

The request for life imprisonment

At the end of their closing speech, the deputy prosecutor of Milan Letizia Mannella and the prosecutor Alessia Menegazzo requested a life sentence with 18 months of daytime isolation. The former barman is accused of voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditation, cruelty, futile motives and having killed his partner. He must also answer for non-consensual termination of pregnancy and concealment of a corpse. After all the interventions of the parties, if there is time, the judges (professional judges Bertoja and Fioretta) could retire to the council chamber for the sentence.
