With the number of positives growing rapidly - 2.5 million people in quarantine according to an estimate - the fourth wave of Covid, marked by the very rapid spread of the Omicron variant, risks "paralyzing" Italy.

For this reason, the government has convened the CTS to evaluate the hypothesis of a reduction in the quarantine for vaccinated people, in particular those with a third dose.

We could reach in a few days, the infectious disease specialist of the San Martino Hospital in Genoa Matteo Bassetti, 10 million people in isolation between positive and close contacts.

"The reflection on the number of people in quarantine - said Commissioner Figliuolo - we did this morning with Minister Speranza. Scientists are studying with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità".

According to initial information, a reduction in the period of isolation could be achieved, exclusively for close contacts, up to 3-5 days. At the moment, in fact, the quarantine for contacts of a positive is 7 days for the vaccinated and 10 for those who do not have vaccination coverage.

To re-enter among the "close contacts" moreover, a handshake or, for example, the stay in a closed place without the mask with a person who was then tested positive is enough.

Among the supporters of the mini quarantine there are the governors Toti, Fedriga and Zaia, Matteo Renzi and also the Gimbe foundation: "Whoever made the vaccine with the third dose - says the president, Nino Cartabellotta - it is more difficult to get infected and therefore we should review the rules for this category. The person vaccinated even with the third dose must see his quarantine reduced. "

Instead, the scientific advisor of the ministry Walter Ricciardi slows down. "Any decision on quarantine methods - he argues - is made on the basis of precise modeling, that is, calculating the impact it would have on the circulation of the virus and on the National Health Service. We must behave accordingly and not on the basis of feelings".

Of the same opinion, the infectious disease specialist of the Polyclinic of Tor Vergata Massimo Andreoni "From a medical-epidemiological point of view it would be a mistake, we increase the risk that infected people could spread the virus further. The initial variant of the coronavirus had a latency time that could reach even at two weeks, as this incubation period has become faster, but it can even reach 7 days, reducing the quarantine is risky especially with such a contagious variant as this ".
