CGIL (Italian General Confederation of Labour) protesters gathered in Rome's streets: "Over 200,000," according to organizers, protesters gathered under the slogan "Democracy at Work."
And Maurizio Landini , speaking on the stage set up in Piazza San Giovanni, did not exclude a strike against the maneuver .
"We're not ruling anything out. Today, we want to demonstrate that a very significant segment of this country is taking to the streets and demanding change," declared the CGIL secretary. " If we aren't listened to, and if Parliament and the Government don't radically amend what we consider to be a flawed law, we will evaluate it and we're not ruling anything out . Our mobilization certainly won't end here if things don't change."
Landini calls for "a real change in economic and social policies. We need to increase wages, we need to make those who don't pay taxes pay , we need real tax reform, we need to seriously invest in healthcare, housing, and fundamental rights, and we need industrial policies because we are a country experiencing a serious crisis in our industrial system."
"We are going backwards," Landini added. "There's a risk that entire sectors, from steel to automotive, will disappear, and so we need industrial policies and very significant public and private investments."
Sigfrido Ranucci, the host of Report, who was recently the victim of a serious attack , also spoke, greeted by applause from the crowd: "We must fight for freedom of the press and for the passage of the law on frivolous litigation and on the lawsuits that seek to muzzle us journalists, and this means preventing you from being informed, from making informed choices. We must all commit ourselves to defending the right to be informed: we cannot allow anyone, with their choices, to make us unhappy."
Regarding the attack: "I'm used to bad things, and so much affection and kindness, passion, and closeness towards me and my team is touching."
