At least five people were seriously injured in the collapse of a building in the Pistunina district of Messina, believed to be caused by an explosion.

They were taken by 118 emergency personnel to the Messina Polyclinic Hospital, where an internal emergency response plan was activated due to the high influx of injured people. Doctors from other hospitals were called in.

The building housed shops on the ground floor—one run by Chinese people—and on the first floor, and apartments on the second. Family members of those living in the building reported to the fire department that they were unable to contact their relatives.

"I walked away after buying what I needed when I heard a huge bang and everything collapsed. There was chaos around me. I walked away, but I'm still shocked." This is what a 40-year-old woman who was in the Chinese-run shop shortly before the building collapsed said.

Chief Prosecutor Antonio D'Amato also rushed to the scene and announced the opening of an investigation.
