Saved first from bombs and then from a tumor. It is the story of Anna Kondratyuk, a 47-year-old Ukrainian from Rivne treated for cancer in Cagliari thanks to a complicated pancreatic surgery at the Aou Polyclinic performed by the team of Professor Adolfo Pisanu, director of General Emergency Surgery.

The woman was supposed to be operated on in Kiev on February 28, but when Russia invaded the country , all operations, including hers, were canceled. She was saved by Natalia, a cousin who has lived in Cagliari for some years: she sent a family member to Ukraine and managed to take her to Sardinia on 5 March. Alone, unfortunately: husband and children remained in the country to fight.

"On February 24th they bombed Rivne - says Anna - I called the hospital in Kiev where I was supposed to operate but they told me that the operations were all canceled". "A month earlier - says her cousin Natalia - she had been placed a biliary stent, which however had to be replaced within a month or so. Otherwise it would have had important consequences. And then the biopsy report also arrived: malignant head tumor of the pancreas. We immediately mobilized and managed to get Anna here and we immediately contacted Professor Pisanu ".

"At the Polyclinic Duilio Casula Anna was immediately welcomed and examined - explains Pisanu - On March 22 we underwent duodenum-cephalus-pancreatectomy. The operation consisted in removing the head of the pancreas, the duodenum and then reconstructing the biliary tract and pancreatic drainage. A very long operation, lasting 7-8 hours and consisting of an exploratory part, a demolition part and a reconstructive part. It is one of the biggest in abdominal surgery. Now we await other examinations but from the surgical point of view it is everything went well ".

Satisfaction with the intervention and solidarity with the refugee were expressed by the Aou dg, Chiara Seazzu, and the medical director Ferdinando Coghe.
