All events in Tempio Pausania have been canceled as a sign of mourning for the death of Gaia Costa, the 24-year-old woman who was hit and killed yesterday by an SUV driven by a 40-year-old German tourist on vacation in the Costa Smeralda.

"Following the tragic loss that has profoundly affected our community, and as a sign of respect and condolences," Mayor Gianni Addis wrote in a statement, "the City Administration has decided to cancel and postpone all public and private events and demonstrations of any kind scheduled in the City, from today until Sunday, July 13th, including the Faber Festival scheduled for July 11th to 13th, postponing them to a date to be determined."

"As soon as the funeral date is known," he continues, "a day of mourning will be declared as a sign of deep respect and sympathy for the grief, and to allow attendance at the funeral. Certain that I am expressing the Tempio community's deepest sympathy for the Costa family's grief, I invite everyone to experience these days with sobriety and respect."

Meanwhile, investigations into yesterday's incident continue: investigators are also interviewing witnesses, while the SUV, a large-engine BMW, has been seized.

The accident occurred shortly after 1:30 PM when Gaia, daughter of Alfredo Costa, a well-known trade unionist for the CISL union in Gallura, was on her way to work and crossed the street at the pedestrian crossing on Via Aga Khan, formerly Via Porto Vecchio. While she was in the lane, the SUV struck her. The sudden impact with the car was devastating: the girl hit her head on the pavement. An ambulance arrived on the scene, and for over twenty minutes, medical personnel attempted to revive the young woman. The tourist behind the wheel underwent alcohol and drug tests, which returned negative results. She is now being investigated for vehicular homicide by the Tempio Pausania Prosecutor's Office.
