"I don't know for sure how many migrants are inside the center, but it's clear there's an emergency." Monastir Mayor Paola Ugas is still unable to provide data on how many people are staying at the reception center on the outskirts of town, following the numerous transfers in recent days following recent landings throughout Sardinia . In the last few hours alone, around a hundred foreigners have arrived on the island, all transferred to the Monastir facility, with numbers expected to rise in the coming hours: an emergency that's heightening the level of vigilance in the town as well.
In this regard, a meeting is scheduled for tomorrow between the Prefect of Cagliari and the municipal administration of Monastir, specifically to address the issue of migrants and their presence within the CPA. "It will be there that we will see exactly what the situation is," Mayor Ugas points out. " Since we took office in June, we have asked for greater collaboration and we have received it. A meeting on the issue was already scheduled after the summer holidays . A fruitful collaboration has been established with the Prefecture and the Police Headquarters."
Migrant arrivals in Sardinia have continued unabated throughout the summer, with an increase in recent days thanks to favorable sea conditions. From Sunday until this morning, migrants were intercepted in Sant'Antioco, Sarroch, and Porto Pino, as well as farther off the southern coast: 26 disembarked at the Piscine di Venere . "This is a situation that repeats itself periodically every year," notes the mayor of Monastir. A mobile unit has been set up at the entrance to the town, on Via Nazionale, present every evening, to try to manage the situation. "Having a greater presence in the area has led to an increase in complaints, so I thank the citizens who have reported particularly worrying incidents."
Particularly during the Ferragosto holiday period, Monastir has seen home burglaries and car damage, perpetrators of which were migrants staying at the CPA. This is also why the situation is being addressed with utmost care: "It's clear that we don't directly manage the situation and that we need help," emphasizes Ugas. "It's a very sensitive issue, requiring great attention and collaboration with law enforcement first and foremost, and with the other agencies involved, including the cooperative that manages the facility. A situation that unfortunately is causing problems for the citizens of Monastir, as well as for us as the municipal administration, cannot be ignored."
