Cagliari, controversy over parking and bike lanes: the City Council is redesigning the roads at Cep and Fonsarda.

Eliminating parking spaces to make way for bike lanes? Cagliari residents don't like it. So, here are the changes to the bike lane project between Cep and Fonsarda. The two one-way lanes on Via Gioia and Via Castiglione will disappear: only one will remain, protected by a flowerbed (no curb). Meanwhile, on Via Medaglie d'Oro, bikes will be allowed to ride at sidewalk level. The goal is clear: to save all parking spaces on the affected streets and avoid the controversy that has surrounded the construction of the bike lanes in other areas of the city, such as Via Pergolesi.

The Cagliari City Council has approved the first appraisal of the €4 million " Green Paths " National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) project. The project aims to connect the San Benedetto market and Parco della Musica area with the Terramaini area through a 3 km cycle/pedestrian network and new green spaces, crossing Piazza Giovanni XXIII and skirting Giovanni Paolo II Park.

The document just approved changes some solutions foreseen in the intervention in some streets: via Flavio Gioia, via Castiglione, via Grandi, via del Nastro Azzurro and via Medaglie d'oro .

At the CEP , the proposed change, which arose from "public interest needs," does not radically alter the project, but rather involves remodeling the entire road section of Via Flavio Gioia and Via Castiglione , without any infrastructural changes. This will make both directions of cycling safer, resulting in the creation of a single two-way bike path on both streets (on the left side toward Cagliari), eliminating the existing one-way path on the latter side ("currently of unsuitable dimensions," according to the report accompanying the resolution). The protective space will not be created with a traditional concrete curb, but with a flowerbed, bordered by curbs, which will accommodate new public greenery.

On Via Grandi and the section of Via del Nastro Azzurro following the entrance to Giovanni Paolo II Park, the cycle path will be removed from the approved project. For the Municipality, this is a duplication of work, as it replicates the connection to Via Castiglione, already provided by the existing path on Via Salvemini. Meanwhile, on Via Medaglie d'Oro , a path will be built above street level (sidewalk level), ensuring greater safety for cyclists connecting to Giovanni Paolo II Park. This will also allow for the preservation of parking spaces, given the demand for spaces reserved for disabled people.

Parking . Parking areas will be modified compared to the approved project. Parking spaces along Via Flavio Gioia and Via Castiglione will be maintained, except for a few at the beginning of Via Castiglione, which would prevent buses from entering and exiting safely at the bus stop. On Via Medaglie d'Oro, too, the construction of a bike path level with the sidewalk will preserve existing parking spaces.
