The severe drought in the northwest of the island continues to cause problems even in urban centers. The effects of the prolonged drought have particularly affected the Bidighinzu reservoir in the Bessude area. ENAS (Sardinia's Water Authority), which ensures water supplies to the Abbanoa water treatment plants, has activated the interconnection from the Temo reservoir to Monteleone Rocca Doria.
The situation is being constantly monitored by all stakeholders: Abbanoa, Enas (National Environmental Protection Agency), the Sardinia Hydrographic District Agency (ADIS), and the Sardinian Regional Government Body (EGAS). For Tuesday, September 2nd, Enas has scheduled a major efficiency upgrade on this crucial interconnection to ensure water service in the communities served by the Abbanoa water treatment plant in Bidighinzu. The work will last 24 hours (from 7:00 a.m. Tuesday to 7:00 a.m. Wednesday) and will result in a reduction of up to 80 percent in water supply to the treatment plant. To limit the inevitable disruptions, Abbanoa has developed a distribution plan for the affected communities, taking into account reservoir reserves, supplies from alternative sources, and the recovery time needed to restore water levels once drinking water production at the Bidighinzu plant is restarted.
Water supply shutdowns are planned in Ittiri, Uri, the Rudas district, Monte Calvia, Sorigheddu, and Carrabuffas in the municipality of Alghero, in Ossi and Tissi, as well as in Muros, Usini, and Sorso . In Olmedo, supplementary water will be available from local wells, but pressure drops in the highlands are not ruled out starting Tuesday afternoon. Abbanoa is also preparing replacement services with water tankers from the most affected areas. A direct communication channel is already active with the mayors of the affected municipalities.
