The Sardinia Region is requesting a halt to the authorization process for the construction of the electrochemical storage plant (BESS) planned for the "Nos de Chercu - Su Dragone" area, in the Ittiri area of Sassari.

The decision comes after a process of institutional dialogue with the local community, initiated through the participation of Francesco Spanedda, Regional Councillor for Local Government, Finance, and Urban Planning, in the open City Council meeting convened to address the project. This dialogue allowed for a deeper understanding of the critical issues highlighted by the municipal administration and local communities , resulting in a joint action between the Region and the Municipality.

The Regional Council today approved a resolution expressing its opposition to the project submitted by Thiesi Solar Srl, requesting the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security to declare the application inadmissible and, in any case, denying the agreement required for its authorization.

The project, which involves a stand-alone plant with a power output of 470.4 MW and a capacity of 1,408 MWh, would cover approximately 9.8 hectares of agricultural land, with grid connection work required.

"The project is incompatible with the current land management model," Spanedda emphasizes. "The energy transition cannot result in an indiscriminate transformation of the land, but must be guided by criteria of sustainability, environmental protection, and respect for local resources. Our position is based on environmental, landscape, territorial, and security considerations," he adds. "The identified area has a strong agricultural vocation, grows valuable crops, and is located in a context characterized by the presence of numerous archaeological and identity-building assets. It is unacceptable to sacrifice valuable agricultural land without adequately evaluating alternative locations."

The Municipality of Ittiri, the Sassari Provincial Fire Brigade, and the National Roads Authority (ANAS) have raised concerns about the project, while the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape has requested additional information on the submitted documentation. Comments have also been received from the Directorate General of Transport and the Sassari Civil Engineering Department.
