Yet another shutter has been lowered in Sassari's historic center. This time, the "Midali" clothing store on Largo Cavallotti has closed for, as stated in a message posted in the empty window, "organizational and management reasons."

It is the paradox of the two-speed economy in the capital of Turritano, lively in the industrial area, asphyxiated within the city.

"While another shopping center is being opened in Predda Niedda, we are witnessing the end of another business in the center," comments Alberto Fois, president of Fipe Confcommercio of North West Sardinia.

"Midali" himself was among the victims of the wave of break-ins that, a few months ago, swept through the city center and numerous businesses, from pizzerias to bars to butchers, often robbed for a few pennies.

In recent weeks, to address the petty crime crisis, the Municipality allocated €250,000—€50,000 this year, €200,000 divided between 2027 and 2028—for the establishment of a private nighttime security service. This met a need expressed by business owners, which was raised in the city council with a motion signed by Antonio Paoni, Democratic Party member and member of the majority, and approved by a majority at the end of June. Now it will be necessary to find a body to take charge of the service and submit a project, since Palazzo Ducale will co-finance it but will not directly manage it.

The measure will provide a small lifeline to Sassari's struggling economic fabric, similar to other areas across the country.
