At eighty-six years old she has returned to school. And now Amelia Casti, the oldest student of CPIA 1 Karalis, after having studied at the San Sperate location, is ready to reach her goal: she is taking, with emotion and pride, the middle school license exam.
A model student, already promoted for interest, participation and interaction with the rest of the class . She was passionate about the Pythagorean theorem, she participated in all the trips. And, at Christmas, she invited classmates to lunch who otherwise would have been alone: she shared the year with Italian and foreign students, many of whom were guests of a reception facility and originally from Gambia, Cameroon, Tunisia, Honduras and the Ivory Coast. For them she cooked lamb and other Sardinian specialties and they, to thank her, gave her a basket of fruit, since almost all of them work in the local markets.
Amelia was born on the eve of the Second World War, her father had been sent to fight several times - first in Spain, then to the front - and her large family needed all the help they could get. After the war, Italy was hungry and devastated, so Amelia attended school only as much as was necessary: studying was a luxury not for everyone. Then she immediately went to work, as happened to most girls at the time.
She worked in various jobs, inside and outside the home, until she found a job as a maid for a cardinal. With him and the sister of the high prelate, she left for Rome: she served in the capital for 30 years. Following the cardinal, apostolic nuncio in several continents, she had the opportunity to get to know many places.
She is very proud to have visited Mexico, struck by the beauty of the places. Back in her beloved San Sperate she became president of Cif, Centro italiano femminile, and - always ready to help others - an active volunteer for Caritas as well as a regular visitor to the municipal library. This year Amelia went back to school to obtain her former middle school diploma. And now she is one step away from the finish line.
