Sardinian parliamentarians from the Democratic Party are loudly calling for a halt to the transfer of 92 prisoners under the 41 bis regime to the Uta prison .
Marco Meloni and Silvio Lai, together with the Democratic Party's justice minister Debora Serracchiani, met with the head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration, Stefano De Michele , to whom they expressed all their concerns about the Ministry of Justice's decision.
Many critical issues were highlighted: "The risks to security and public order: the possibility of new criminal infiltration, the structural deficiencies of prison police personnel, the extremely serious difficulties in prison healthcare . Currently, there are no guarantees capable of ensuring effective protection of legality and security in light of the increase in inmates subjected to harsh prison regimes."
A transfer that must be stopped at all costs, "Sardinia cannot alone take on a third of the entire population detained under 41 bis in Italy" , it is a "wrong and dangerous choice, which unloads a disproportionate and unsustainable burden on a single region".
A decision that falls outside the jurisdiction of the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP), De Michele explained. For this reason, the parliamentarians consider it urgent to brief Ministers Nordio and Piantedosi . It is also essential to overcome ("We have received assurances on this matter," the parliamentarians specify) the "unacceptable" ministerial order ("Confirmed to us by De Michele himself") for Sardinian prison officials to "abstain" from the regional council , which had requested a hearing.
The Sardinian Democrats are also calling for a change to the rules that designate island areas as a priority destination for prisoners under the 41-bis regime. "These rules have been overtaken by the facts," they emphasize. "In twenty years, the social, institutional, and economic context has changed profoundly, and today these provisions translate into a clear injustice and a concrete risk to the security and stability of the territory."
And they urge all political forces, first and foremost the parliamentarians elected in Sardinia, to fight to prevent this transfer .
