A denied cigarette could have cost the life of Lorenzo Porru, the 23-year-old from Quartu who was beaten to death and abandoned in agony on the street at Poetto in Cagliari on the night between Saturday and Sunday.

Luckily the young man's conditions have improved : after a day in intensive care at the Brotzu, in a pharmacological coma, yesterday he was transferred to the neurosurgery department because his conditions are considered to be "constantly improving" .

The carabinieri have reconstructed what happened on the coast of Cagliari after midnight. The three were outside a club when one of the attackers asked a friend of the victim for a cigarette. The refusal gave rise to a heated argument that degenerated into a brutal beating .

Today Nicola Loddo and Francesco Carta, the two Quartesi aged 22 and 31 arrested for attempted murder , appear before the investigating judge for the validation hearing. Defended by lawyers Miriam Manca and Sandro Sassu, they could decide to tell the judge their version of the facts or make use of the option not to answer.

The two girls aged 19 and 22 who were with them were also reported for wrongful death: Maria Dolores Ibba and Martina Trudu would have witnessed the beating without intervening and would have gone away with the attackers before the ambulance arrived.

In the meantime, the deputy prosecutor Rita Cariello is continuing to coordinate the investigations by the Carabinieri: the images of the city cameras that cover the Poetto seafront and which may have filmed the entire attack are being examined .
