Polar temperatures throughout the island, even today: almost -7 on Gennargentu, -6 in Fonni and below zero in the mountains near Cagliari, between Sinnai and Burcei, and on the Mandrolisai hills . This morning in Cagliari the thermometer showed 2 degrees, but with the first rays of the sun the temperature rose. And the wave of bad weather shows no signs of abating: according to forecasts, temperatures will continue to drop in the coming days , with a new Arctic perturbation arriving over Italy. The snow and ice alert on the island has been extended until Monday: isolated snowfalls above 700-900 meters will still be possible - reads the notice from the Civil Protection - with the possibility of ice forming on the road surface above 600 meters .

NEW

If the Nuorese woke up for the second day under the snow, today the flakes also made their appearance in the capital of Barbagia .

The mayor of Nuoro has also ordered the closure of schools in the city, instead the stop to lessons in mountain villages started yesterday . Andrea Soddu has also set up a 24-hour telephone number to help frail people, the elderly and anyone in need of assistance or travel.

Three salt-spreaders and as many snowplows are in action in the cities to guarantee the safety of the road system. The clearing of snow and ice from the sidewalks is also underway, the municipality recommends citizens to go out "only in case of need" .

THE MOUNTAIN TOWNS

Between yesterday evening and this morning, but not entirely, the serious blackout that affected the 5 highest municipalities on the island (Desulo, Tonara, Gadoni, Belvì and Aritzo) due to the lines torn down under the snow weight. There is still no electricity in Asuai, a district of Desulo . And also in Seulo there are 42 blackouts.

NORTHERN SARDINIA

The snow peeped out this morning also on the coasts of Northern Sardinia : not only in the mountain villages such as Tempio and Calangianus, but also near the sea. The island of Tavolara had its peaks whitened before a heavy rain washed away the snow . It also snowed in Porto San Paolo, while in the whole of upper Gallura, on the Limbara mountains, you can only circulate with snow tires or chains.

ROADS AND TRANSPORT

The Highway Police with its 23 patrols is in action in all the streets with the most critical situations, in particular the Statale 131 between Macomer and Campeda and the 389 Nuoro-Lanusei .

«In these conditions, as long as the weather alert remains, do not travel without winter tires and chains on board to come to Barbagia - is the appeal of the head of the Nuoro traffic police Leo Testa -. Many motorists call our switchboards with the intention of going to Fonni or Desulo to see the snow, but they don't have the necessary devices. Those who come to Nuoro from the 131 DCN state road or have to cross Campeda, or worse still have to take the 389 state road to go to the mountains, cannot do so without devices ».

At 5 this morning a heavy vehicle got stuck on the entry ramp from Nuoro to the 131 DCN , but at the moment the traffic is quite flowing both on the state and provincial roads of central Sardinia, thanks to the presence of snowplows and salt spreaders.

Inconvenience also in maritime transport : a connection between Santa Teresa Gallura and Bonifacio, in Corsica, was skipped, while the Carloforte-Portovesme service was diverted to the Calasetta port of call.
