Since January 2025, over a thousand irregularities have been reported in Cagliari, involving incorrect waste disposal or abandonment and waste tax evasion. The latest violation was identified both with the support of surveillance cameras and thanks to the fieldwork of officers from the Cagliari Local Police's Urban Hygiene Unit, established last December, who caught violations of the municipal regulations on urban waste management red-handed.

The Urban Hygiene section, composed of one official and nine Local Police instructors, operates in coordination with the Soil Hygiene service.

The operational guidelines are defined on a quarterly basis "and the results of the control activities are made public with criteria of transparency and continuity", the local police announced.

"Collaboration with institutions and citizens always leads to tangible results," comments Luisa Giua Marassi, Councilor for Urban Ecology, Environment, and Public Parks. "The primary objective is to increasingly combat improper behavior, consolidate a culture of legality, and respect for the environment . The Section's work also serves to strengthen cooperation between the administration and the virtuous citizens who work alongside us every day to protect the environment and the decorum of the city, which is now finally perceived as 'their home.' This is a significant shift in perspective that makes proper waste disposal perceived as not only a legal requirement but also essential for the care of the land and the health of all."
