The anesthetist Tomaso Cocco, although on a temporary basis and as a substitute, has returned to direct the Simple Departmental Structure of Pain Therapy of the ASL 8 of Cagliari.

The appointment, signed by the general director Marcello Tidore , having acquired the opinions of the health director Roberto Massazza and the administrative director, Gianluca Calabrò , was necessary to guarantee an administrative helm to the structure, for the time strictly necessary to complete the selection of a new primary.
In September 2023, the doctor from Cagliari had already been appointed to lead the Pain Therapy department created at the Marino hospital in Cagliari: a center of excellence that replaced the clinic hosted at the Binaghi. A point of reference for approximately 2000 patients suffering from pathologies of all types, capable of providing 10,500 services over twelve months to mitigate the suffering of those living with chronic and excruciating pain.

A few months after that appointment, Tomaso Cocco was arrested as part of the "Monte Nuovo" investigation , the investigation by the Cagliari district anti-mafia directorate and the Carabinieri ROS which hypothesizes the existence of a mafia association aimed at committing crimes against the public administration.

According to the reconstructions of the investigators, the group brought together white collar workers and historical exponents of Nuoro crime from the past, including Nicolò Cossu and Tonino Crissantu.

Among the many investigated by the DDA as part of the investigation there are also the former regional councilor for Agriculture, Gabriella Murgia, and the rector of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, now candidate for mayor of his city for the centre-right.

After spending a few months in prison (in Uta and then in Pignatelli in Palermo), head physician Cocco was freed . Although the Court of Review of Cagliari had excluded the hypothesis of mafia association, hypothesizing a simple criminal association aimed at committing crimes against the public administration , the DDA magistrates kept the charge linked to the mafia and an alleged secret association.
