A new urban park, an 87-space park-and-ride, and improvements to improve traffic safety . This is the redevelopment plan for the approximately 14,000 square meter area between Via Porto Botte and Via Sironi, near the Caracalla surface metro station in Monserrato: the preliminary technical and economic feasibility study has been approved by the Metropolitan City of Cagliari . The goal is to transform the current unpaved area, currently used haphazardly as a parking lot, into a more functional and attractive public space, also with a view to improving the integration of public transportation, parking, and pedestrian mobility.
The project includes four functional sections, designed to be completed in different phases.
The first involves the creation of a central park with lawns, pedestrian paths, benches, and tall trees, including poplars and cypresses. A small plaza for waiting passengers will also be created near the Caracalla stop, continuing the linear park along the Rio Saliu.
The second phase includes a park-and-ride parking lot with 87 spaces , including four reserved for people with disabilities, as well as spaces for motorcycles and bicycles. The area, covering approximately 3,557 square meters, will also include green areas and draining pavements. Access points will be located on Via Porto Botte and Via Sironi.
The project also includes the reorganization of the traffic flow on Via Porto Botte and Via Sironi , with new parking spaces for residents and localized narrowing of the carriageway near pedestrian crossings, to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety.
The last intervention concerns the arrangement of the northern part of the existing linear park, through the modification of the differences in level, the creation of new pedestrian connections and additional plantings .
Particular attention will also be paid to rainwater management. The area is located above a manhole of the Rio Saliu: the solutions envisaged, including permeable surfaces and drainage trenches, aim to limit stagnation and promote drainage.
The total cost of the planned works is estimated at €1,406,453.23. Approval represents a step toward completion, but it doesn't mean construction is ready to begin. Further design steps will be necessary.
