The provisional heatwave data for 2026 published by Istat show persistent record heat in Italy. As highlighted in the BES report, the heatwave duration index in 2026 (the data relates to the period from January 1st to September 15th) is increasing across Italy, reaching a record high since 1991.

The index reaches 75 days, up 38 days from 2025, and significantly surpasses the previous peak of 59 days in 2003.

The Italian National Institute of Statistics confirms the islands' vulnerability to droughts : in 2024, the number of consecutive days without rain was 23 (in line with the 1991-2020 period), and in 2025, it dropped to 18 days. However, the islands are more vulnerable than other regions. In this case, the highest value is recorded in Sardinia, with 53 consecutive days without rain, followed by Sicily with 41.
