The Cagliari Forestry and Environmental Protection Corps has cracked down on illegal fires and waste disposal. These practices seriously jeopardize green spaces and agricultural land, as well as public health.
The Forestry Commission is particularly focusing on some abandoned or degraded areas in the municipalities of Cagliari, Selargius, and Monserrato.
"The illegal burning of waste, in addition to causing serious soil and air pollution, causes a progressive depletion of agricultural land, making it unsuitable for both cultivation and grazing, with long-lasting and often irreversible effects on the rural ecosystem," the Forestry Corps explains, reporting that in the latest inspection operations, four people were reported and an agricultural area of approximately 1.5 hectares in the Selargius countryside was seized.
Among those reported were two Bosnian citizens who, as business owners, collected waste door-to-door or on-call for a fee. The collected material was collected in an agricultural area and then incinerated to eliminate the non-recoverable components (plastics and non-marketable materials), in order to extract the ferrous metals for sale at recycling centers.
In Terremaini, near Viale Marconi, a man was reported after being caught red-handed while burning waste. According to the investigation, he was not registered with the TARI taxpayer and was therefore reported to the Municipality of Cagliari.
Investigations are also underway at two other businesses, where significant quantities of various types of waste, including hazardous and special waste, such as paint and thinner containers, as well as sheep carcasses, have been found to be incinerated.
