A human chain in front of the sea, a moment of silence and the sound of the waves to remember the victims of the Morandi Bridge tragedy in Genoa, the viaduct that collapsed on August 14, 2018, causing the deaths of 43 people.
The moving commemoration, now a tradition, is held annually on San Pietro beach in Valledoria. This morning at 11:36 a.m., a group of people joined hands along the shoreline for a moment of silence that ended with a long round of applause. A long human chain, emotionally paying tribute to those who lost their lives that day.
The initiative was promoted by Luca Sestri, a lifeguard at the Baia Verde resort, originally from Sardinia but who lived in Genoa for twenty long years . He brought together beachgoers and invited them to share a ritual to honor the many victims, including motorists and workers working in the recycling center below, who died after the bridge's supporting pylon collapsed. At 11:36 a.m., the bridge collapsed, killing 43 people and displacing 566 people.
