Maria Luigia Pilia is Emigrant of the Year: awarded in Gesico for her connection to Sardinia.

Fifty years in Tuscany without ever forgetting her Sardinian roots. This is the story of Maria Luigia Pilia, known to all as Marisa, who was awarded the second annual "Emigrant of the Year" prize, part of the program of the Emigrant Festival in Gesico.

This award recognizes those fellow citizens who, despite having built their lives far from the island, continue to maintain strong ties to their homeland and to Sardinia, while also fully integrating into the communities that welcomed them. This is precisely the journey of Marisa Pilia, who emigrated to Tuscany half a century ago. In Montemurlo, she built her life, launched a solid business, purchased a home, and over time earned the respect and affection of the community. Her presence has become a true point of reference for many Sardinian emigrants, both old and new.

During the evening, the special significance of the relationship between Sardinia and Tuscany was also emphasized. The former president of the Circolo Narada of Montemurlo recalled the reception and integration policies adopted by Tuscany, calling them a particularly significant example in the Italian landscape. Marisa, with her experience, perfectly represents this integration journey. She is a dynamic woman, well-known and respected not only by her fellow citizens, but also by the municipal administration and institutions of Montemurlo and Prato. Fully integrating into a new community without severing ties with Gesico and Sardinia is not a foregone conclusion. And it is precisely this balance between integration and identity that made the award given to Marisa particularly significant.

The award was presented to her by the Pro Loco and the Municipality of Gesico, following a musical evening hosted by Panky Alma and Matteo Trullu. Marisa received applause from the audience and a symbolic embrace from her home community. The "Emigrant of the Year" award thus takes on a meaning that goes beyond a single personal story: it celebrates the profound bond between those who leave and the town they remain, that invisible thread that time and distance cannot break. Gesico therefore extends its congratulations to Marisa Pilia and thanks for carrying with her, throughout fifty years of Tuscany, the name and memory of her hometown. And the next appointment is already next year, with a new story of emigration, identity, and roots to tell.
