No short circuit or technical failure: the fire that broke out yesterday inside the Bitti town hall was caused by someone. Only the speed of the intervention by the firefighters who arrived from Nuoro avoided significant damage, but there is one certainty: it was an attack.

The start of the fire, on the top floor of the building, was reported yesterday morning, around 9am, by some citizens to the municipal administrators. The analysis of the specialists of the teams who arrived to tame it ruled out the accidental origin.

The administrators, worried by this first analysis, immediately asked for the intervention of the police, to whom they handed over all the available video surveillance images of the entrance to the Domo Cumonale, so as to clarify as soon as possible facts that risk disturbing the serenity of the local administration and the entire community.

The town of Bitti, according to the administration, has a capillary video surveillance network fully operational and positioned in various points of the town centre. Just in recent days a series of maintenance interventions have taken place which have ensured the proper functioning of the system.

The area affected by the damage, on a floor where Municipality documents are located, is limited to a single shelf where, however, no high or visible flames developed. Throughout yesterday and again today, municipal administrators and employees, supported by the Archival Superintendence of Sardinia, with Monica Grossi (superintendent) and Consuelo Costa (State Archivist official), and by the carabinieri of the Cultural Heritage Protection Unit of Cagliari, have worked to secure the materials affected by the fire.

From a first estimate it seems that some historical documents have been damaged and perhaps minimally destroyed, not useful for administrative activity, but which will still need to be recovered.

«The hope», observed the mayor of Bitti, Giuseppe Ciccolini, «is that the facts will be clarified quickly and for this we rely on the high professionalism of the police, to whom we have assured all our collaboration, so that every useful detail must be verified to reconstruct the truth which must be handed over to the citizens of Bitti and their administrators".
