Almost all of the alleged leaders and organizers of the two gangs at the center of the Carabinieri operation “Polo Ovest” (ALL NAMES HERE) availed themselves of the right to remain silent.
Today, in several prisons across Sardinia, prominent figures such as Luciano Corraine, Raffaele Nonne, Martino Contu, and Salvatore Sotgiu appeared before the investigating judge. These are just a few of the main suspects in the case opened by the Cagliari DDA (Anti-Mafia Directorate) into alleged international drug trafficking, with alleged massive movement of cocaine and marijuana throughout the country. According to the investigation documents, some shipments of white powder were apparently buried.
The defense (Francesco Lai, Herika Dessì, Giocchino Genchi, Roberta Cannas, Marco Piroddi, Giuseppe Talanas, Alessio De Gregoris) are waiting to see the documents from the investigation (begun in 2019) by prosecutor Rossana Allieri for an initial assessment of the position of the arrested individuals.
The "West Pole" operation conducted by the Carabinieri in Olbia overlaps with other investigations underway in Brescia and Turin. The Cagliari DDA has documented alleged contacts between some of the suspects and Calabrian figures, but there is no passage in the Cagliari investigating judge's order that explicitly indicates direct ties with members of the 'Ndrangheta.
The Sassari Prefecture is examining the position of the incumbent mayor of Esporlatu, Antonio Fadda, an Army soldier who has been ordered to remain in residence. Fadda, defended by criminal lawyer Sergio Milia, has so far declined to comment. He will be heard by the Cagliari investigating judge on Friday.
