The Cassation puts an end to the trial on the Darsena Veleni, the body of water that rises close to the former petrochemical plant, in the industrial port of Porto Torres .

The third criminal section of the Supreme Court of Cassation, presided over by judge Luca Ramacci, rejected the appeal presented by the defense lawyers, Piero Arru, Luigi Stella and Fulvio Simoni, Grazia Volo and Riccardo Olivo, confirming the sentence imposed against three former executives Syndial, Francesco Papate, Oscar Cappellazzo and Gian Antonio Saggese, convicted on appeal by the Court of Sassari, in December 2021, for the crimes of culpable environmental disaster and disfigurement of natural beauties.

The investigation had been initiated by the Public Prosecutor of Sassari, which had identified the leaders of Syndial-Eni and Polimeri Europa as the alleged perpetrators of the pollution of the service dock, for years fed by the polluted aquifer characterized by the presence of carcinogenic substances, with levels thousands of times higher than the limits permitted by law.

The appeal process ended with the confirmation of the sentence pronounced in the first instance in 2016 by the judge of the Court of Sassari, Antonello Spano. The sentence to pay the legal costs incurred by the civil parties was also confirmed: Ministry of the Environment, Region, Municipality of Porto Torres, the company of the Polese Brothers, Anpana, the Committee for the Protection of the Gulf of Asinara, the Anti-hunting League and Capsa.

The Municipality of Porto Torres, represented by the lawyer Antonello Urru, will initiate the civil suit to obtain compensation for damages for environmental pollution.

The first instance sentence established the amount of compensation that the defendants will have to pay to the parties: 200,000 to the Ministry, 100,000 to the Region and the Municipality of Turri, 50,000 for the two Polese brothers and 10,000 each for the other four civil parties.
