"The Honorable Ghirra's statements have left the police officers of the province of Cagliari stunned. Instead of praising the professionals of disorder, she is trying in every way to dishonor the police officers who are fighting off violence from individuals who have little regard for public order and safety."
The regional secretary of the SIULP, Massimo Vargiu, was more than annoyed by the tone of the question presented by Cagliari MP Francesca Ghirra to the Ministers of Defense and Interior, Guido Crosetto and Matteo Piantedosi, regarding the manner in which law enforcement intervened during the anti-militarist demonstration near the Decimomannu base.
On June 14, protesters attempted to approach the fence: a low-flying helicopter was used as a deterrent, and tear gas started a fire.
For Ghirra it was a distorted and excessive use of public force.
"We consider these statements an insult to human intelligence," Vargiu vents. The police union representative continues: "The commissioner, the managers, and the dedicated colleagues have proven themselves to be professionals under difficult working conditions and weather. Our thanks go to all of them, for every day they demonstrate, if there were still any need, their devotion to the State and the uniform. Hands off the State Police."
