Confindustria against the Region, which in recent days sent the redevelopment project of Portovesme Srl for the production of lithium carbonate and mixed metal oxides to environmental impact assessment .

Glencore, owner of the plant, has already made it known that the decision, which it considers a setback, could lead to the choice of identifying another site outside the island. Now also comes the harsh stance of the association of industrialists of southern Sardinia , with a note forwarded to the Ministers of Business Adolfo Urso and of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.

«The incomprehensible choice of the Sardinia Region, technically unjustified as it complies with all the health, safety and environmental standards required by the legislation currently in force, discourages investments and is in open contradiction with the Italian strategy of ensuring a safe and sustainable supply of critical raw materials", writes Confindustria, "in particular through circular economy models and puts Italy at a disadvantage compared to the main European countries such as France, Germany and Spain".

The press release continues by explaining that «this decision also appears to be in conflict with the will expressed by the Italian Government to ensure the coordination and administrative action necessary for the timely and effective implementation of investments recognized as being of pre-eminent national strategic interest».

Among the most alarming aspects of the decision taken, according to Confindustria, «is that of losing the possibility of building in our country the largest plant in Europe for refining battery metals - an initiative with significant investments, which would constitute a driving force economic for the territory and Sardinia, as well as ensuring the domestic future - currently uncertain - in the production of electric vehicles".

When in doubt, the accusation seems to prevail, "the strategy of not doing and postponing indefinitely, without assuming one's own responsibilities and regional competence. This is particularly serious if we take into account the economic, social and employment context of the territory in which Portovesme Srl operates and if we consider that the same constitutes the basis on which the site reconversion project is based".
