Now that the work is complete, and Via Roma has revealed its new face, the issue that remains to be resolved is the one that has been driving Cagliari residents crazy for two and a half years: traffic on the city's main artery.

The reopening of the portico side of the street to cars (restricted to one lane in each direction) hasn't changed the situation much : traffic jams, honking horns, and nerves on edge, even in August, when traffic volumes are naturally lower. In the background, two deadlines will only exacerbate the situation: the reopening of schools in September, and the arrival of the metro construction site on Via Roma, which, if not September 9th, is certainly around that time.

As if by magic, the debate over the solution to the traffic problem—a tunnel or a trench—has returned to the forefront . Pierluigi Mannino, leader of the Brothers of Italy (FdI) group in the Council, has revived the debate.
