There are 800 migrants at the Monastir reception center. These numbers are worrying Mayor Paola Ugas, who is ready to request a formal meeting with the Prefecture and denounce "a situation that cannot be considered ordinary and cannot become the new normal for Monastir without a serious and transparent assessment of the facility's capacity, its management conditions, and the impact this situation is having on the local area."

The mayor explains that Monastir "has done and continues to do its part, with a sense of responsibility and respect for the institutions. But precisely for this reason," she adds, "we believe it is essential that our local community be listened to and involved in decisions regarding a facility of this size. This is not an ideological issue, nor is it a conflict between citizens and migrants . It is a question of sustainability, safety, organization, and respect for the community that the facility hosts."

Ugas poses a few questions: " Why did the number of people admitted reach 800? What is the actual capacity of the facility? What are the organizational and safety conditions currently? What resources and efforts have been deployed to address this situation? We can't simply acknowledge the growing numbers. We need to manage this phenomenon, ensuring adequate conditions for those welcomed, for those who work in the facility, and for the host community. Reception is the state's responsibility," he concludes, "but so is ensuring that it is sustainable and compatible with the local area."
