Attempted massacre in Ozieri: here's how the 64-year-old set his "death trap" for the Carabinieri and police

He allegedly faked the murder of his partner "to lure the police into a deadly trap."
This is what the Carabinieri and the Police wrote in a joint statement regarding the intentions of the 64-year-old man – Antonio Maria Pani – who caused panic in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday in Ozieri and who now risks having to answer to very serious charges.
Here is the investigators' official reconstruction of what happened:
«During the night just passed, in Ozieri, the Carabinieri of the local Company and the personnel of the State Police Station arrested a man in flagrante delicto because he was considered responsible for the crimes of massacre, threat to a Public Official and simulation of a crime».
«In particular – the investigators explain – during the evening of yesterday, April 29, a call came into the 112 emergency line requesting an urgent intervention at a house located in the locality of “Tramentu” because a man had reported having murdered his partner (without specifying other details), announcing his intention to take his own life».
The firefighters from Ozieri and the 118 emergency service, as well as police officers and carabinieri, quickly arrived on site.
The rescuers – the investigators explain – «were able to access the interior of the building consisting of four levels by climbing over the perimeter wall and forcing the entrance door, as they were also alarmed by the strong smell of gas that affected the entire area . The operating personnel then inspected all the rooms and, having reached the last apartment, found that the rooms were completely saturated with gas as the doors and external windows had all been carefully sealed with bodywork tape in order not to disperse the mixture of propane gas that was leaking from two large cylinders that had been specifically connected to the pipes of the internal ventilation system ».
After securing the house, officers and soldiers were able to track down the man, "who immediately showed a hostile attitude."
The 64-year-old was also in possession of a remote control equipped with a wireless system: this device, if activated, would have given power to a grinding wheel and a hob which, when started, would have caused a shower of incandescent sparks that would have triggered the gas explosion with terrible consequences for the police and rescuers.
Furthermore, «numerous handwritten sheets of paper bearing delirious phrases against the Carabinieri, the State Police and the Judiciary, as well as books and posters praising fascism» were recovered in the house. This material is now being examined by the judicial authorities.
The investigations also revealed that in 2022 he had defaced and destroyed the plaque placed in the Chilivani hamlet in memory of the selected carabiniere Walter Frau, murdered on the morning of 16 August 1995 by some robbers together with his colleague Ciriaco Carru.
The 64-year-old was finally arrested and, by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Sassari who coordinates and directs the investigation, transferred to the Bancali prison.
