"It is unacceptable and shameful that, in 2025, a city like Alghero is being ignored on the issue of healthcare." This was the harsh outburst from Christian Mulas, president of the Health Commission, who once again denounced the state of neglect in which Alghero's healthcare system finds itself.
"We're talking about the second largest city in the province of Sassari," Mulas emphasizes, "with over 80,000 inhabitants, including the hinterland and a tourist catchment area that exceeds 150,000 visitors in the summer. Yet, there's no sign of a new hospital or an expansion of the Civil Hospital. It's clear: for this region, Alghero has no dignity."
The politician points the finger at the current regional government: "Since President Todde took office, silence has fallen on the new hospital. Promises vanished, shelved. Meanwhile, in San Gavino Monreale, a town of just 8,000 inhabitants, a new 215-bed hospital is being inaugurated. The future is being built there, while here silence and disinterest remain," Mulas insists.
The numbers tell a different story: nearly 40,000 annual visits to the Civile Emergency Room, over 1,200 orthopedic procedures, hundreds of operations in various departments, and thousands of consultations daily.
"An essential service," Mulas emphasizes, "not just for Alghero but for the entire northwestern Sardinia. Yet today it seems worthless."
The list of critical issues is long: the tunnel to Pediatrics is still closed, the Pediatrics and Cardiology departments are only open until 8 pm, the Birth Unit is closed, and the Marino hospital is at risk due to its transition from a university to a local health authority.
"Meanwhile," Christian Mulas accuses, "the arrival of two doctors is being celebrated as a turning point. The patch is shorter than the hole." Finally, the appeal: "I address our regional representative, Di Nolfo: we need concrete answers, not more proclamations. Those who govern today have a duty to solve the problems. The citizens demand seriousness, action, and respect. Alghero cannot wait any longer."
