Environmental activist Greta Thunberg told Swedish officials she was being subjected to harsh treatment in Israeli custody after the blockade of a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza.

The Guardian reports this, having seen an email sent by the Swedish Foreign Ministry to people close to Thunberg. In the correspondence, an official who visited the activist in prison stated that she described being held in a bug-infested cell with insufficient food and water.

"The embassy was able to meet Greta," the email reads, according to the Guardian. The young woman "reported dehydration and insufficient water and food. She also stated that she had developed rashes that she suspects were caused by bedbugs."

Thunberg then spoke of "harsh treatment and said she was left sitting for long periods on hard surfaces." "Another detainee reportedly told another embassy that she had seen her forced to hold flags while photos were being taken. She wondered if images of her had been distributed," the Swedish ministry official added.
