"My mother died of natural causes, I would never have hurt her: when I discovered her lifeless body I was desperate, I didn't have the money for the funeral and so I locked her in there". Sandro Mallus tells the press for the first time what really happened in the house on Via Piemonte that he shared with his mother, Rosanna Pilloni, found inside a freezer by the Carabinieri of the Sarroch station.

"I can't find peace for what I did," Mallus says, "I made a mistake and I will pay for what I did, but I'm not a murderer."

The autopsy, scheduled for the next few hours, will confirm or deny the fifty-eight year old's theory: in the meantime, everyone in town hopes that Rosanna Pilloni really did die of natural causes; a violent death would make this story, which has kept Italy in suspense for days, even sadder.
