The trail of polluting material was so wide that it was visible from satellite. And, above all, it was released in a stretch of sea where that type of operation is prohibited. For this, and for other irregularities found on board, the Odoardo Amoretti, a 15,000 gross ton tanker flying the Italian flag, was detained upon arrival in Sarroch and charged with negligent pollution.
The facts date back to last March 13. The Odoardo Amoretti, which bears the name of the founder of the Emilian shipping company that owns it, was sailing from France to Sardinia . In the evening, the French maritime authorities received a report from the satellite system called Clean sea, used by the European Agency for the Safety of Navigation (Emsa) to monitor pollution phenomena in the waters of competence.
The tanker resumed navigation yesterday, after the critical issues found on board were resolved: in the morning it set sail towards Oristano.
