The lawyers of those under investigation in the so-called Traghettopoli investigation want access to all data held by the Genoa Public Prosecutor's Office. The prosecution and defense are already clashing over the first act of a major consultancy on the email accounts of 14 Moby Group executives, files that investigators believe contain information on 34,000 free trips on Vincenzo Onorato's ferries .
Yesterday, the defense reiterated the need for unrestricted access to email accounts. The heated exchange took place between prosecutor Walter Cotugno and the lawyers of the more than 120 people under investigation for corruption and other crimes (Coast Guard officers, maritime directors, Moby managers, public officials, politicians, magistrates, and members of law enforcement).
Moby's lawyers have announced a request for an evidentiary hearing, a measure that will freeze the investigation . Several Sardinian lawyers were also present in the Morandi Bridge trial courtroom (including Marzio Altana, Sara Pala, Pietro Carzedda, Luca Montella, and Pierfranco Tirotto).
Unrestricted access to the data is important for the defense, as the evidence gathered would, in most cases, rule out preferential treatment for the shipowner. Among those under investigation are the mayor of Olbia, Settimo Nizzi; the former president of the Sardinian Port Authority, Massimo Deiana; and Roberto Isidori, deputy chief of staff to Minister Matteo Salvini (who is completely unrelated to the Ligurian prosecutor's investigation). Isidori vehemently maintain that he never made decisions or took measures favoring the Moby group . Some of the alleged incidents occurred in Porto Torres. An important ruling from the Supreme Court of Cassation is now awaited (December 10). It is not excluded that numerous cases may be closed even in this initial phase of the investigation.
