The Government has chosen the new “prison man”, Andrea Ostellari .
The responsibilities left vacant at the Ministry of Justice by the resignation of Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro have been redistributed. Ostellari (Lega) has been given responsibility for the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) and the Penitentiary Police , while Deputy Minister Francesco Paolo Sisto has been given responsibility for the Department of Information Technology (DIP) and the honorary judiciary.
The delegation of the Dap directly concerns Sardinia, given that Delmastro himself had illustrated to the State-Regions Conference the plan that foresees the creation of institutes "exclusively dedicated" to 41 bis, especially on the islands and in particular in ours, where the transfer of dozens of prisoners under the harsh prison regime is planned .
The Sardinian Democratic Party (PD) has seized upon Delmastro's resignation to call for a review of the plan. Senator Marco Meloni today submitted a question to Minister Nordio : "Delmastro's resignation raises a political question the government cannot avoid: is that plan still in place? Who will take responsibility? " the Democratic Party MP asked.
"Sardinia has the right to know whether it will be forced to house a third of Italy's 41-bis prisoners, in a region that accounts for only 2.7% of the national population ," Meloni insists. And it's not just a question of "fair distribution of the most dangerous prisoners, of massive staffing shortages in prisons and courts, or of the unsustainable burden that prison healthcare places on Sardinia's regional coffers."
There's much more, a "concrete risk" that affects the future of the entire island. "Concentrating mafia bosses and top organized crime figures in Sardinia just as the massive investments related to the Einstein Telescope are approaching means exposing these resources to the real risk of infiltration, money laundering, and mafia entrenchment."
The resignation of Delmastro, who "conceived this plan without involving the Region", is the occasion to raise a political question to which Meloni demands a clear answer: "Should the transfers be reviewed, should a discussion be opened with the Region, should the distorting rule on island preference be addressed, or should we carry on as if nothing had happened?"
