Bibles, missals, about thirty books, crucifixes and rosaries. These are some of the objects recovered from the case of the thefts in churches, which have occurred in recent days in Southern Sardinia and in particular between Sulcis and the province of Cagliari. A fifty-nine-year-old, originally from Cagliari and without a fixed abode, was identified as the perpetrator and tracked down this morning by the Carabinieri of Sant'Antioco, with the support of the Santadi station, the Operational Unit of the NOR and the Nucleo tutela Patrimonio culturale of Cagliari.

The investigations began following the complaint of the parish priest of the church "Nostra Signora di Bonaria" in Sant'Antioco, who reported the theft of a missal and some liturgical song books: it happened on Friday afternoon. The investigative activity, also conducted with the use of video surveillance systems, allowed the person responsible to be identified and - once tracked down - to proceed with a personal search and search of the vehicle . The fifty-nine-year-old was reported.

During the operation, several sacred objects were found, including missals, gospels, prayer books, volumes for choral chants, rosaries, a wooden crucifix and a gilded plaster angelic statuette . The objects were collected, seized and stored in a suitable location, as they were believed to be partly the proceeds of thefts committed in other churches in the province of Cagliari and in the rest of the region.

The recovered objects will now be returned to the parishes that previously owned them . In Sulcis, the churches of Tratalias and Perdaxius had closed outside of celebration times since yesterday, for security reasons. In Cagliari, thefts were reported in Sant'Anna, Sant'Eulalia and Santa Rosalia , with images of the thief in action . San Sebastiano in Elmas was also violated.
