A new Caretta caretta nest in Colostrai (Muravera) is hatching . It happened yesterday: a swimmer noticed what was happening and immediately contacted the Villaputzu Forestry Department and the staff of the Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area. Experts verified the condition of the nest and the hatching progress: out of 104 eggs, almost all hatched, with a 96.2 percent success rate.
A small, still-alive but very weakened specimen, as Marine Area staff explained in a statement, was rescued and transferred to the MPA's first aid center , where it was able to regain its strength. That same evening, at 11:30 PM, it was released and returned to the sea.
On July 6th, again in Colostrai, another nest was reported (again thanks to a swimmer). This time, it was in the process of laying eggs. The nest is still being monitored by volunteers today.
Colostrai beach, in short, seems to be a favorite of loggerhead sea turtles this year. A beautiful postcard for a beautiful and pristine area. It's likely that there are other loggerhead sea turtle nests both in Muravera and along the beaches of Costa Rei, Castiadas, and Villasimius. The Capo Carbonara Marine Protected Area is paying maximum attention.
