At the national level, the curve of infections and deaths begins to decline, in Sardinia, on the other hand, the downward direction is not yet seen.
Since the beginning of the year 199 Sardinians have died from causes related to Covid, since the beginning of the pandemic there have been 1,923. A situation even more understandable with other numbers relating to the boom in cases, which yesterday exceeded 2,500, and hospitalizations, which yesterday were more than ten in the medical area.
And although the Omicron variant is less lethal but more contagious, this does not mean that it cannot be fatal for those who have chosen not to get vaccinated and for those suffering from other diseases.
“The increase in deaths is evident as is the fact that this is linked to the increase in cases; we didn't have many positives even in the first wave - says Sergio Marracini, epidemiologist and director of the single hospital unit of the Assl of Cagliari - An unvaccinated positive has a 30% higher relative risk of getting sick than a vaccinated. In essence, therefore, a positive no vax is 30 times more likely to get sick than someone who has completed the cycle ". To make a comparison: "A smoker is 8 times more likely to have lung cancer than a non-smoker", this is the extent of Covid for an unvaccinated.
Fragile patients are obviously at risk, “those who are not vaccinated risk much more. And it is clear that the virus can be deadly for those with other problems. In general, however, even vaccinated patients can have pathologies that normally do not lead to death, but if they become positive they can have serious consequences ".
Out of a sample of ten deaths, "eight are linked only to Covid-19, and they are all unvaccinated", adds Marracini. The others are patients suffering from other pathologies.
