The Municipality of Aglientu is at the forefront of coastal ecosystem protection. The municipal administration, led by Marco Demuro, submitted and won a call for proposals from the Sardinian Coastal Conservation Agency, as part of the "Algae to whom? – I am not an algae" campaign. The aim of the initiative is to highlight and raise awareness of Posidonia oceanica, a marine plant of fundamental importance to the coastal ecosystem.
The initiative aims to raise awareness among residents and tourists about the role of so-called "banquettes" in the natural protection of beaches. The initiative, conceived and organized by the Sardinian Coastal Conservation Agency, is in collaboration with Sémata Società Cooperativa, and involves ten coastal municipalities in Sardinia with information and awareness-raising activities aimed at residents and visitors. A statement from the Municipality of Aglientu states: "An event has been organized for Wednesday, August 26th, with the following program. In the morning, an eco-sustainable creative workshop, "Art Attack," led by environmental guide Salvatore Nurra, will involve participants in the creation of a small Posidonia oceanica meadow, a creative activity designed to introduce young people, especially those who are younger, to the marine environment. In the afternoon, starting at 2:30 PM, an information activity will be held on Rena Majore beach aimed at children attending the Aglientu Municipality summer camp and everyone else at the beach. With the help of environmental guide Salvatore Nurra, we will illustrate the characteristics of Posidonia oceanica, its importance for the sea and for protecting beaches, its properties, and, above all, the behaviors and actions each of us can adopt to contribute to its protection. At the end of this activity, participants will receive a kit provided by the Sardinian Coastal Conservation Agency, along with a certificate of participation.
For the municipal administrators of Aglientu, participation in the campaign and selection among the participating municipalities represent further confirmation of Aglientu's dedication to safeguarding its natural heritage and promoting greater environmental awareness, especially among younger generations.
