Since the beginning of 2022 , the local police of Sassari has sanctioned 514 people for forging the signs of car parking spaces reserved for the disabled.

One of the offenders was also reported for impersonation and faces up to a year in prison: according to the accusations , he replaced the photo of the holder of a regular pass with his own photo .

The checks, which went on for ten months, covered the entire municipal area .

There was a group of young people who came to study in Sassari and parked their car in a paid space, exhibiting a sticker that guaranteed free parking. But both the document and the car were registered to the long-deceased grandfather of one of them .

In another case, a carer continued to use the pass after the death of her caregiver . The agents discovered the deception after stakeouts and cross-checks.

Most of the time the offenders had photocopied a duly issued sticker in color and then used it in several cars at the same time . In one case the disabled person had been hospitalized for some time in an assisted healthcare facility while the family continued to use multiple photocopied documents to park effortlessly near the house, in paid parking spaces and in those reserved for those who really need it.

These behaviors, recalls the local police, "seriously harm those who have the real right to take advantage of the stalls. The highway code was changed in 2021 with the tightening of penalties which can now reach almost 700 euros plus the reduction of four points from the license. The local police will continue in this activity for the arrogance and incivility in the city to end".
