A suspected case of West Nile was found in the countryside of Valledoria , to be precise in the Tamarici area, in a specimen of gray crow.
Confirmation from the National Reference Center of Teramo is still awaited, but the Sassari Local Health Authority recommends vaccination of horses .
West Nile Disease is an infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes, the virus is maintained in the environment through continuous passage between mosquitoes and wild birds. In humans it is asymptomatic in over 80% of cases, but more serious forms with neurological symptoms can occur in elderly people or with immune deficiency . The most serious symptoms (high fever, severe headache, muscle weakness, disorientation, tremors, vision problems) occur in less than 1% of infected people.
In this phase it is essential to remove the outbreaks, and here it is necessary for Municipalities and Provinces to intervene with disinfestations .
For horses, explains the ASL, the only prevention measure is the vaccine, which is the responsibility of the owner of the animals: «The horse breeders are asked to vaccinate their animals and report all cases of symptoms to the ASL veterinary services. nervosa found in this species, which must be subjected to in-depth investigations regardless of the geographical area where they occur. Furthermore , the population and farmers are invited to report any discovery of dead birds to the veterinary services ", explains the director of the veterinary prevention department of the Sassari local health authority, Franco Sgarangella. There is no limit on the movement of animals but, explains the Local Health Authority, "it is advisable to implement vaccination prophylaxis programs before such movements, especially towards territories where viral circulation has been demonstrated".
