Road accident fatalities are increasing in Sardinia, with the island's mortality rate reaching 3.15, nearly double the national average of 1.74.
These are just some of the numbers published in the second volume of the Sardinian Observatory on Road Safety.
The report, which analyzes statistics for 2024, is the result of a collaboration between the University of Cagliari's Interuniversity Center for Economic Research and Mobility, the regional Department of Public Works, and the nonprofit organization Adessobasta. "As with the first volume," the University explains, "the report monitors road accidents at the European, national, and regional levels."
While a reduction in road accident deaths has been recorded at European level (-2.2% compared to 2023), the national picture remains critical, despite a decrease of -0.3% on an annual basis.
As mentioned, the situation in Sardinia is alarming. According to statistics, 113 deaths were recorded in 2024, three more than the previous year (+2.73%) . The number of injuries also increased (4,908, +6.26%). The regional mortality rate is 3.15, almost double the national average (1.74).
The analysis goes into even more detail. Looking at the data on fatal accidents in 2023, we note that 39 occurred on state roads, 37 on provincial roads, and 26 on urban roads.
Among the most dangerous roads are state highway 125 and state highway 389 (5 deaths each), followed by state highways 126 and 195 (4 deaths). 75% of the victims were men between the ages of 25 and 59.
"The data is worrying," emphasizes Gianfranco Fancello , professor and scientific director of the Sardinian Road Safety Observatory. "A change of pace is needed that establishes a strong line in road safety governance and prevention policies at all levels."
"We have allocated over €100 million to improve the safety of provincial roads," emphasizes Regional Councilor for Public Works Antonio Piu . "We are also opening a series of construction sites on state roads to improve safety. We have also focused on municipal traffic, allocating €60 million for road safety."
